Your Bonsai Knows Spring Is Coming Before You Do

You might still be reaching for a jacket on cooler mornings, but your bonsai could already be responding to the approaching South African spring.

As temperatures gradually rise and daylight increases, many bonsai begin transitioning from their quieter winter period towards active growth. Depending on the species and local climate, buds may start swelling, new shoots can appear and water consumption may slowly increase.

This makes late August an interesting time for bonsai enthusiasts.

Don’t suddenly treat your tree as though summer has arrived, though. Instead, start observing it more closely. Check the soil regularly rather than following a rigid watering schedule, and watch for signs of emerging growth.

Spring can bring several changes:

  • Faster water consumption
  • New buds and shoots
  • Increased pest activity
  • Opportunities for certain pruning and repotting work
  • Changing sunlight requirements

Every bonsai responds differently, which is why observation remains one of the most valuable skills you can develop.

The calendar might tell us that spring begins soon, but your tree doesn’t read calendars.

It responds to temperature, sunlight, moisture and its immediate environment.

So take a closer look at your bonsai today. It might already be telling you that winter is almost over.
