Your Bonsai Doesn't Need a Schedule | Sometimes It Needs You to Look

Bonsai care can quickly become a collection of schedules. Water today. Fertilise this week. Prune this month. Repot during this season.

Schedules are useful, but your bonsai can’t read a calendar.

A quiet Saturday morning is an excellent opportunity to simply look at your trees.

Check the soil rather than automatically reaching for the watering can. Examine the leaves and branches for unexpected changes, pests or damaged growth. Look at where your bonsai is positioned and consider whether changing seasonal conditions mean it’s now receiving too much—or too little—sunlight.

Spring is approaching in South Africa, making observation especially valuable as temperatures rise and many trees become increasingly active.

You don’t necessarily have to prune, wire, repot or fertilise anything today. Sometimes the best thing you can do for a bonsai is notice what it’s telling you before deciding whether intervention is necessary.

That’s also part of the pleasure of growing bonsai. These aren’t decorations that remain unchanged throughout the year. They’re living trees responding continuously to their environment.

So spend a few minutes with your collection this Saturday.

Before asking, “What should I do to my bonsai today?” ask a better question:

What does my bonsai actually need today?
