A Relaxing Saturday with Your Bonsai Trees

Bonsai does not always have to involve major pruning, wiring, repotting or dramatic styling decisions. Sometimes one of the best ways to enjoy the hobby is simply to spend a quiet Saturday observing your trees.

Spring brings plenty of activity to the bonsai garden. New shoots appear, buds open and trees begin responding to warmer temperatures and longer days. That makes September an especially rewarding time for South African bonsai enthusiasts to inspect their collections.

Spend Time Observing Your Trees

Look closely at new growth and consider how each tree is developing. Check the soil moisture, inspect leaves and branches for possible pests, and make sure existing wire is not beginning to bite into rapidly thickening branches.

Most importantly, resist the temptation to work on a tree simply because you have free time.

Bonsai rewards patience. Observing how a tree responds throughout the growing season can teach you just as much as pruning or styling it.

Take your coffee outside, walk slowly through your collection and appreciate the small changes that might otherwise go unnoticed during a busy week.

Sometimes the most productive thing you can do for a bonsai is nothing at all. Watch it grow, learn from it and enjoy having it in your garden this Saturday.
