Bonsai naturally draws our attention towards what we can see.
We admire the trunk, branches, leaves, flowers, movement, and eventual silhouette of the tree. Yet much of the work keeping that bonsai alive is happening somewhere we cannot easily observe.
Beneath the soil.
Our recent discussions about bonsai soil and repotting provide a fitting thought for Blessed Sunday Week 40. Healthy roots quietly support everything happening above them. We might not admire them every morning, but without that hidden foundation, there would eventually be nothing left to admire.
Life often works similarly.
Not every period of growth produces something immediately visible. Sometimes we’re developing skills, recovering from setbacks, learning patience, or preparing for opportunities that haven’t appeared yet.
Bonsai teaches us not to rush those processes.
We provide suitable soil, water carefully, offer appropriate light, prune when necessary, and give the tree time to respond.
Then we wait.
This Sunday, appreciate the unseen progress happening beneath the surface.
Strong foundations don’t always attract attention, but they’re often responsible for everything that eventually does.
