If the shops vanished tomorrow, your garden might take on an entirely different purpose. Tonight, Budding Backyard Bonsaist brings a green perspective to 7 Days to Die, as Shadowolf hosts a Dark Veil Society showcase during Stream-O-Ween.
A fictional apocalypse invites us to imagine gardens as places of survival as well as enjoyment. Available space, sunlight and water would shape every planting decision. The question would shift from what looks attractive to what you can successfully grow and keep growing.
Even without a zombie at the gate, it is an interesting exercise for anyone learning to garden:
- Which edible plants suit your local conditions?
- How would you protect your water supply?
- What could you grow in containers?
- How would you keep improving your soil?
Bonsai would hardly feed a settlement, but tending a small tree could still offer a comforting routine. There is something hopeful about caring for living things when the world around you feels uncertain—even in a fictional wasteland.
Join Shaun M Jooste tonight on 8 October at 6pm SAST / 12pm ET for horror books, survival gameplay and community conversation. Tell us what you would plant first in your apocalypse garden.
