Budding Backyard Bonsaist proudly wishes women across South Africa a Happy Women’s Day 2026.
Observed annually on 9 August, National Women’s Day commemorates the historic 1956 march in which more than 20,000 women gathered at the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against apartheid pass laws.
Their courage and determination remain part of South Africa’s national heritage.
Today also provides an opportunity to celebrate women participating in communities and hobbies of every kind — including gardening and bonsai.
Bonsai brings together people from different backgrounds through a shared appreciation for nature, patience, creativity and the fascinating process of developing living trees into beautiful miniature landscapes.
Women contribute to bonsai as growers, artists, teachers, collectors, nursery owners and enthusiasts, helping preserve existing knowledge while introducing new generations to the art.
Whether you’re spending Women’s Day working on your bonsai collection, exploring a nursery, relaxing in the garden or simply enjoying the public holiday, we hope you have a wonderful day.
Today we remember those who helped change South Africa and celebrate those continuing to make their mark.
From Budding Backyard Bonsaist, Happy Women’s Day 2026 to the incredible women of South Africa!
