Bonsai can become a wonderfully involved hobby. There is pruning, wiring, repotting, feeding, styling and years of planning involved in developing beautiful trees.
Fortunately, your bonsai doesn’t require a major project every time you visit it.
Sometimes five minutes is enough.
Check the soil to determine whether the tree needs water. Look over the foliage for unusual discolouration, damage or signs of pests. Check whether the tree is receiving appropriate light and make sure changing weather conditions haven’t created a new problem.
Then simply enjoy looking at it.
Regular observation is one of the most valuable habits a bonsai enthusiast can develop. Small changes are easier to notice when you’re familiar with how your tree normally looks.
It can also prevent unnecessary intervention.
Beginners sometimes feel they should constantly be pruning, wiring or otherwise doing something to their bonsai. In reality, there are plenty of occasions when the best thing you can do is observe the tree and allow it to grow.
Bonsai develops over years, not afternoons.
You don’t need to transform your tree every day.
Check what it needs, provide the necessary care and enjoy those few quiet minutes together.
