Saturday Morning with Your Bonsai

There is something particularly peaceful about spending a Saturday morning among your bonsai trees.

You have nowhere to rush. The week’s responsibilities can wait for a moment. Grab your morning coffee or tea, step outside and spend some time simply observing your miniature trees.

Importantly, observing doesn’t always mean doing.

Bonsai beginners can easily fall into the trap of constantly pruning, wiring, repotting or otherwise interfering with their trees. Sometimes your bonsai needs you to leave it alone and let it grow.

Your Saturday morning check could include:

  • Testing whether the soil needs water
  • Inspecting leaves for pests or damage
  • Looking for fresh spring growth
  • Checking wire for signs of biting into branches
  • Turning containers where necessary for balanced sunlight

Once you’ve checked everything, spend some time appreciating your trees.

Notice how much they’ve changed. Look at new buds appearing as spring approaches. Think about how their shapes might develop over the coming months.

Bonsai isn’t only about producing the perfect miniature tree.

The quiet process of caring for it is part of the experience.

This weekend, don’t feel pressured to perform major bonsai work.

Make yourself something warm to drink, head outside and spend Saturday morning with your little trees.
